Meet the Kelku Highlands
Our registered Highland fold, Kelku, is at the heart of Edenvale Farm.
Kelku is our registered fold name with the Australian Highland Cattle Society (AHCS), and every Highland at Edenvale Farm is registered with the Society.
We're building our fold thoughtfully, with a focus on temperament, soundness, maternal ability and the distinctive characteristics of the Scottish Highland breed. Our breeding females currently include C Grade and B Grade registered cattle, and we carefully consider each mating as we work towards the future of the Kelku fold.
But pedigrees are only part of the story.
Because our fold is intentionally small, we know our cattle as individuals. Each has their own personality, relationships and place within the herd. Our calves are raised with regular, calm handling and become accustomed to being brushed, hand-fed and halter trained from a young age.
Our Highlands are raised on pasture as part of our broader regenerative approach to farming. We aim to work with the land rather than against it — using thoughtful grazing and land management practices to support healthy soils, diverse pastures and a resilient farm for the future.
Above all, we want to raise healthy, happy and well-handled Highland cattle that are a pleasure to have around.
Jamie
the matriarch
Jamie is the undisputed matriarch of the Kelku fold — quietly (and sometimes not so quietly!) making sure everyone knows who's in charge.
She has excellent feet, as assessed by our cattle farrier, and has produced three calves to date. Jamie calves easily and is a capable, attentive mother with a strong instinct to look after not only her own offspring, but the wider herd.
She's protective, confident and just a little bossy, but underneath it all she's incredibly sweet. Jamie loves a good scratch and is always happy to come over for some attention.
With her sound feet, easy calving, strong maternal instinct and lovely nature, Jamie represents many of the qualities we value in our breeding females at Edenvale.

Charlotte
the gentle leader
Charlotte holds a particularly special place at Edenvale Farm. Incredibly sweet, calm and easygoing, she's simply a pleasure to have in the fold.
While Jamie may be the matriarch, Charlotte is often our 'first mover'. When it's time for the cattle to come when called or move to a new paddock, Charlotte is usually the one to take the first step — and once Charlotte is moving, the rest of the fold tends to follow. She doesn't need to be bossy or dominant; the others just seem happy to go with her.
The same age as Jamie, Charlotte has had three calves and is an excellent, attentive mum. Her relaxed nature carries through everything she does, from raising her calves to interacting with us around the farm.
Gentle, dependable and wonderfully easy to be around, Charlotte has the kind of temperament we particularly value in our Highlands — and, if we're allowed to have favourites, she might just be ours.

Delilah
the affection seeker
Delilah is Jamie's first calf and one of the most affectionate members of the Kelku fold.
Given the choice between fresh hay and a brush, Delilah will choose the brush every time. We can spread hay out for the entire herd and, while everyone else heads straight for breakfast, Delilah will wander over to us instead, hoping someone has brought her brush. She absolutely loves being groomed, scratched and spending time with people.
Delilah hasn't inherited Jamie's bossiness, she's gentle, easygoing and simply a pleasure to have around.
Delilah is also rather distinctive, with an impressive set of very long horns that, so far, seem far more interested in growing outwards than curling upwards.
She recently welcomed her first calf and has taken beautifully to motherhood. She's a wonderful, attentive mum, adding another quality we really value to her already lovely temperament.
Affectionate, gentle and wonderfully people-oriented, Delilah is one of those cows who makes it very difficult to walk through the paddock without stopping for a cuddle — or, preferably in her opinion, a very long brush.

Lucy
the easy going one
Lucy is Charlotte's first calf, and she seems to have inherited her mum's wonderfully calm, easygoing nature.
She's one of those cows who simply gets on with life. Gentle and uncomplicated, Lucy is an easy member of the fold and a pleasure to have around.
She recently welcomed her first calf and took to motherhood as though she'd been doing it forever. She was calm and relaxed from the beginning, settling naturally into her new role and proving to be a lovely, attentive mum.
There's something particularly special about seeing Charlotte's beautiful temperament coming through in the next generation. Lucy may not demand the spotlight, but her quiet nature, ease within the herd and natural transition into motherhood are exactly the kinds of qualities we appreciate in our Highlands.

Ruby
the social butterfly
Ruby is Charlotte's second calf, although when it comes to personality, she's taken very much after her dad, our former bull George.
Playful, curious and just a little bit cheeky, Ruby has always loved being around people. She was one of the first calves we weaned in the paddock surrounding our farm stay, which meant a steady stream of new faces arriving at Edenvale each week. Ruby quickly decided this was a wonderful arrangement and became very comfortable meeting new people.
She still loves human company and will happily come over simply to see what you're doing and be part of whatever is going on. She's affectionate, enjoys a good brush and, more than anything, seems to genuinely enjoy interacting with people.
Ruby will join the bull for the first time this year as the next generation of our breeding fold.
With Charlotte's lovely nature and George's playful personality, Ruby is a delightful combination of both — friendly, confident and always entertaining to have around.

Margot
a gentle soul
Margo is Jamie's second calf and quite possibly the gentlest member of the Kelku fold.
She has the most beautiful, quiet nature and absolutely loves being around people. Like Ruby, Margo was weaned in the paddock surrounding our farm stay, so from a young age she became accustomed to new faces coming and going. She's wonderfully relaxed around people and is always very happy to stop for a scratch, a brush or simply some company.
Margo has excellent feet and a temperament we would have loved to carry forward in our breeding program. Unfortunately, an injury to one of her front legs when she was younger means we've made the decision not to breed from her. Her comfort and wellbeing will always be more important to us than producing a calf.
Instead, Margo has a very important role as one of our much-loved paddock pets and a gentle companion within the fold.
She's never the one pushing her way to the front or competing with the others. She's patient, incredibly sweet and seems happiest when she's quietly standing beside you enjoying some attention.
Margo may never have calves of her own, but she represents something equally important to us — that every animal has value beyond what they can produce.
